Scrum Down!

Is it just me or does time seem to be accelerating?

Just now it was Christmas, closely followed by New Year, in a blink of an eye the Chinese New Year had come and gone and already we are bracing ourselves for the Rugby Sevens tournament.

Somewhere in the middle of all this came an instantly forgettable budget, even blander than its predecessors though beforehand I would have thought that impossible. All major issues ducked, just enough sweeteners given to stave off rebellion. What a waste of time and money.

For a long time Hong Kong led the world in developing the shortened form of the game, now everyone else has jumped on the bandwagon and 7s is poised to become an event in the Olympic Games. The extra points teams earned by winning our event have now been stripped away by ungrateful administrators with no sense of history. That’s life I suppose. I am happy to say I have attended every HK Sevens since the inaugural one in 1976.

The umpteenth diet failure looms large so I have begun my first 36.5 day alcohol-free spell of the year to try to generate some momentum. It was only on the second day I realized that would mean a "dry" Sevens for me this year. Probably no bad thing when you think about it. I’ll get to see more of the rugby without the need to climb up and down the stands to find the toilet….
